Cottage retreat

Its 27degrees, not a cloud in the sky and we were on a 3hour drive down south.
As we drive down windy roads, a forest lays at the bottom of the cliffs to the side of us and stones are hitting our car on the rural roads. You know you’re in the middle of nowhere when the road turns into stones.

We find the canopy camping sign and down the drive way following the instructions we received earlier. Before coming to a little path, carrying our bags down, excited to relax in the heat, we walk past the kitchen, the fire pit to the side and open the door to the little Cob Cottage.

The cottage is essentially just the bedroom and is built out of clay, sand and straw. It holds the heat and slow released it. And by gosh does it hold the heat. The room was toasty after the beautiful days we had and it meant after a day in the sun, watching the sunset and sitting outside getting heat from the fire roasting marshmallows, you could then go back to a nice warm room to wind down and sleep in.

Everything else at this cottage is outside. The outside kitchen, table, toilet and bath. It’s the perfect retreat away from society.
On the Monday I sent my phone off for repair, they asked if I had a spare one. I smugly responded no. Because although there's signal and a power point to charge your phone, it defeated the whole point of the escape.
We stayed 2 days and New Zealand delivered, we had beautiful 29degrees weather both days. Being half an hour out of Tauranga meant a short drive to the mount in the morning, a brutal climb. A dip in the freezing sea before grabbing some snacks for the afternoon filled with reading in the sun and boardgames. Before showering outside as the sun sets, drying off in the remaining heat and settling down to the fire. I read a book in a week and recharged my soul.

If you need a break from city life, a break from the real world. I would highly recommend, this rural retreat was everything. Having a bath under the stars was worth the millions of bites I got on my foot. Waking with the sunrise was the perfect way to wake up early.
