A Letter to Shane Dawson

A few months ago I wrote a blogpost called a Letter to Shane Dawson, however I never posted it because I felt like I couldn’t finish it. Ever since all I can think about is posting my letter to Shane Dawson.
My original letter to Shane was more my concern over the amount of YouTubers I suddenly see jumping on the Shane Train essentially just wanting a series with him and claiming they’d been fans since day 1 yet never mentioning him before.
As someone who grew up a fan of Shane, and got bullied for expressing their support for Shane at age 15 it infuriated me that because Shane has suddenly become popular, everyone wanted to claim they’d been around from the start.

Ive supported and been a fan of Shanes work since I was 13, I loved his sketches, id watch his videos to make me laugh everytime I needed an escape. Id get excited for his uploads and I once spent 50pounds on a custom I love Shane Dawson hoody. It had the iconic Shane icon with his Epic sunglasses on the front and, in neon pink, I <3 Shane Dawson on the back. I wore it every day to school, and almost every day I got shouted at, people would make fun, they’d harass me as I walked home because they didn’t know who he was, which deemed me ‘uncool’ and automatically Shane ‘Gay.’ Jokes on them because Shane is Bi.

When I turned 18 and went travelling I kind of dropped of the Youtube scene and lost touch of everyone I once loved. Around a year and a half ago I clicked a random Shane video and fell in love all over again. You see with Shane, I have grown with him, he grew with me. Shane’s sketches are still what got me through my high school misery and it saddens me when he bashes his old videos however I can see why he doesn’t like them anymore. They’re not him anymore.

I watched Shane grow as I grew up and I’m still watching his channel grow because he’s not afraid of change. Shane has become more and more popular once again due to his honesty, his candid personality, his ability to tell a story without it feeling like you’re being deceived.

Shane has always deserved the success he has achieved from starting youtube, but especially now. It makes me happy to see his numbers and views grow and think that those kids who hurled abuse at me 8years ago, now hold out for his series.

The only thing that saddens me is how nice he is, people can easily take advantage of Shane and its something that worries me and annoys me about the sudden surge of youtubers confessing their love for Shane and claiming they have for years. When in fact have never tweeted him before let alone mention him.
I know Shane is a big boy and can handle himself but I will always care, despite the fact he doesn’t even know my name. Because Shane was there for me growing up without even realising it and I am here for him still through everything hes been hurled at in the past 10years and continues to hurl himself at.

Shane, I am proud of everything you do and for always sticking to your true authentic self. Its why we came 10years ago and its why we’re here now. You changed the game of Youtube back then and you’re doing it again now producing content better than some TV shows and all because you are passionate, and we can see it.
Keep doing you boo.
