The Shock of the Fall
The Shock of the Fall.
Author – Nathan
Filer.
I have two emotions
towards this book. The first is that I want to burn every copy but my
own so it can be my little secret book of perfection. The second
being I want to buy every copy and walk around throwing them at
people insisting they must read it. 10 points if you hit them in the
face as well.
This book is one of
those that put my faith back in the beauty of books. I adore books
dont get me wrong, they have become my best friends and I enjoy every
read. But its been a long time since ive cried at a book. Yes The
fault in our stars im looking at you. And its been forever since I
felt that much raw emotion every time I opened the book. To me this
book was beautifully written and has easily become my favourite.
The synopsis follows
the story of Matthew Homes as he tells us about a snippet of his
life. If you read the blurb of this book you will know already that
he tells us that his brother Simon dies in a few page. Putting such a
storyline bomb like that in the first few pages of a book made me a
little skeptical but curious how the story was going to play out. And
I have to say props to Nathan Filer for keeping me hooked with the
enigmas chapter after chapter. I have to praise him for character
development as well, as by the end I felt like I was being told the
story by Matthew personally himself.
Till like every author
he had to go and break my heart!! Matthew near the start mentions how
he has always wanted his name on the side of abook, now we're sat
there reading his story, and a part of my felt like a proud friend,
like he was living out what he wanted. Till half way through he
decided to break my heart and bring in reality that he has changed
the names of charterers from their real names. Now I know all of it
is fictionally, but a part of me felt like a wall had been broken, a
wall of lies, like the people id just developed feelings for aren’t
even who they said they are.
Im a reader that liked
to find flaws in books, even the slightest such as I didnt like a
certain character because they were mean, or the author wrote a
really stupid sentence that got me mad to remind myself that even the
most perfect things in my life still have their flaws. But The Shock
of the Fall had non that I can point our nor do I want to. I can
safely say this is one of my new favourites and I cant wait to read
it again.
